More And More Cyclists Turning To Touring Bikes

Bicycling has been a viable mode of transportation and an option for recreational use for longer than the beloved automobile has been around. People have used bikes for basic daily transportation as well as for a variety of sporting endeavors and simple pleasurable outings. In recent years there has been a resurgence of bike riding and as a result, an increase in the sale of touring bikes as well.

Bikes for touring are special, in that they are designed and built especially for long-distance excursions, and also for professional cycling and bike racing. The bikes that are built for these purposes are typically lightweight but at the same time very strong and durable. They are built from special materials that can withstand the demanding stresses put on them during long biking trips, which often makes them some of the more expensive bikes on the market.

Another thing that sets touring bikes apart from other types of bicycles is the various bike gear that is specially designed to be added to such bikes, such as luggage racks. These special racks are typically mounted on both the front end and back end of the bike and provide a great way to carry the items needed for bike travels.

For those who have a lot of gear to take along on their journey, there are even special bike trailers that can be towed by a touring bike. These allow the cyclist to take along much more gear on the road but at the same time this can also add considerable weight if the trailer is fully loaded. For cycling routes that include steep climbs, these types of bike trailers are not recommended. In fact, there are many avid cycling tourists who take along very little gear on their bikes. These adventurers plan their routes so that they are able to eat at restaurants or markets along the way, and sleep in hotels, B&Bs or hostels. In this way they can enjoy a minimal load on their bike and still enjoy the basic comforts that people enjoy on holiday even when engaged in bike travel.

Other standard equipment on touring bikes are multiple water bottle racks because it is so important that the cyclists stay hydrated at all times during their rides. When on a tour, it is also advised to take along a tool kit, tube repair kit and tire pump. These additional items are important so that riders can enjoy their adventure cycling tours and not end up getting stranded along the road far from their next stop.
