Skate sharpening

Question
I've been skating with a 3/8 grind, but recently upgraded my skate.  The new skates also have a 3/8 grind, but they seem a lot "edgier" - almost slower.  Should I try a different grind with the new skate?  What grind do you use?  Thanks!

Answer
Hi C.J.,

I also use a 3/8 grind, but what you might be noticing is since its a new blade, it might not be grinded to a smaller radius. When you buy new skates, the standard I believe is usually a 13' radius, meaning there is more blade on ice, causing slower speeds but better balance. I use a 9' radius, and this puts less blade on ice, causing faster speed, but a slight harder time to keep balance.

It might be harder to find someone who can do the radius or rocker cut, as not all sharpeners are equipped for it.

Hope this helps you get back to your fullest speed.

Thanks,

Guy
