The Katadyn Hiker filter does have a couple of small draw backs though. You do have to do all the work to get the water filtered. You have to pump the filter to pull the water through. It takes about a minute to filter a liter of water which is approximately 48 strokes. It can be tiring if you want to filter a lot of water for several friends.

The filter also only lasts for about 200 gallons of water over the life of the filter. Of course if you have a lake or river that is really muddy it will wear down the filter quicker. There are other models that can take a different type of element that might last longer or have an element protector so that it will last longer. The filter is field serviceable but unlike some other filters it isn't as serviceable.
