Buying a used motorhome can be an exciting experience, but there are pitfalls you should be aware of when making your choice. As with buying a house, buying a motorhome requires research, preparation and inspection. Unless you enjoy throwing money away, inspection of the used motor home is vital. 

Before you Begin the Search

This list will lay out the things you need to look for and the equipment you might want to bring with you when inspecting motrohomes from used RV dealers. Things to Look for when Buying from Used RV Dealers: 

1. Water Leaks: A water leak can be double trouble in that it will cause damage, but can also be the sign of larger trouble (bad pipes, faulty seams, etc.). Be sure to check around windows and openings for any signs of water leakage. This can make the RV a "no buy" or "reduce the price" because you'll need to do some minor repairs like caulking or major repairs like replacing windows. It all depends on the amount of water getting in. 
2. Delamination: The standard construction of an RV wall is a layered material that is fused together in the factory. Delamination is when these layers start to separate from each other. Bulges in the wall that are soft when pushed are signs of delamination. If detected, this should automatically be a "walk away" situation because even if it's possible, repairing the damage can be very expensive.

3. Roof: When inspecting the roof, review its overall condition. Look for any damage or excessive dents from hitting low tree limbs. Check for any signs of leaks around sunroofs or windows. Do the vent covers show any cracks or damage? Be sure to check that any equipment is properly mounted and free of excessive corrosion. 
4. Engine, Transmission, Brakes and Suspension: From the tires to driveshaft, you will need to check all these elements. If possible, bring along a mechanic who can provide expert advice in this area if you are unsure of anything. These are a vital elements to check because if there are issues here, your RV may become a modular home instead of a motorhome. 
5. General interior and exterior appearances: For the interior, look for excessive wear and tear in the interior including the upholstery and any cabinets or doors. On the exterior, inspect the trim for peeling or erosion. Depending on the amount of separation, repair costs may get excessive. Look for dents or signs of repair in the body. These could indicate a past accident. Unless you are a restorer, you're going to want the best condition available.
