Avoid Being 'Taken for a Ride' When Buying a Used RV

Traveling for pleasure can be a hassle and strain the wallet when you're hopping from motel to motel, dining out every night, and living out of a suitcase. Traveling by RV eliminates those hassles because in many ways, you're taking your home on the road with you.

RVs, or recreational vehicles, vary a great deal in size and cost. In most cases, purchasing an RV is not a trivial investment. Your requirements and budget will probably dictate the style and size of the RV you purchase, and you can often find good deals on used RVs if you spend some time looking. There should be a reasonable selection of used RVs for sale in Missouri to choose from.

Purchasing anything that's used normally requires that the potential purchase be subject to more scrutiny than a brand-new model would. When inspecting a used RV, it's important to evaluate it with a critical eye and not let your emotions guide your decision. Never forget that there are probably other used RVs for sale in Missouri that would satisfy your requirements.

It's easy to forget details when you're out looking to buy a used motorhome. For that reason, it's a good idea to create a checklist that you can bring along. During your inspection, you can consult the checklist so you can be sure you don't forget anything that should be looked at.

You can also use the checklist or another list to make note of any problems you find. That list could become a valuable negotiation tool if you start getting serious about a particular RV and want to begin talking with the owner or dealer about price.

Many RVs depend on propane gas to provide power, so be sure to check the lines and hoses that connect the propane sources to ensure that they are not cracked or broken.

Batteries keep the power up and running in an RV, so make sure they are not too old and prone to failure.

Check all the appliances if the RV is equipped with them. You'll want to make sure things like interior lights, stoves, microwave ovens and refrigerators are in good working order.

Safety is a primary concern when operating any motor vehicle, so be sure all the exterior lights, windshield wipers and mirrors are not missing or broken.

Taking the vehicle for a test drive is highly recommended and will provide a chance to check the brakes, steering, turn signals and other safety equipment. Inspecting the tires to be sure they're not excessively worn is also a good idea.

Check all doors, windows, roof vents and utility access points to make sure they all seal properly when closed.

Running water is essential for life on the road, so make sure it's working for all sinks, showers and toilets. Test them all to make sure there are no problems.

Check all interior storage spaces by opening and closing drawers and cabinets to be sure they are secure when closed.

Carefully inspect the floor to be sure it is solid and is not weakening and soft due to rust or rot.

Air conditioning and heating should also be tested.

Unlike a new RV, when you buy a used motorhome you are less likely to be protected by a warranty, making it very important to have confidence in the one you choose. Even a used RV in good condition can provide you with many years of dependable service and enjoyment; just be sure to inspect it thoroughly before purchase.
