Tornado Safety: Where to Find Shelter During a Tornado

In the event of a tornado, the safest place to take shelter is in a basement or storm cellar. If these are not available, seek out a small, interior room on the lowest floor possible, away from windows. Closets, bathrooms, and hallways can all provide some protection from the high winds and debris of a tornado. Be sure to stay away from windows, as they can shatter from the force of the wind and cause injury. If you are in a mobile home or car, abandon it and seek shelter in a sturdy building. If you are caught outside, lie flat on the ground in a ditch or low-lying area, and cover your head and neck with your hands.
