How To Rappel Without A Harness

2016/7/25 17:51:22

Do you want to know how to rappel without a harness? If you find yourself in a critical situation where you need to go down a wall and all you have is a rope and no harness, then you may want to rappel with just the rope. But by all means, try to avoid rappelling without a harness, as it's a risky and sometimes painful maneuver.

To rappel without a harness, you will need:

  • A rope
  • An anchor at the top of the wall or climb
  • Gloves (optional, but recommended)
  • Thick clothes (also optional, but highly recommended)
  1. To rappel without a harness, first find a good anchor. This should be at the top of your climb; tie the rope to it. Step with a leg on each side of the rope.
  2. Assuming that you are right-handed, lift the rope with your right hand from your back. Make it go from your right hip across your chest to your left shoulder. If you are left-handed, mirror these instructions to your side.
  3. Always looking at the anchor, let the rope fall to your back. Hold it again with your right hand to the right side of your lower back.
  4. Friction between the rope and your body is the key. To slow your descent, put more pressure on the rope with your body. That's why thick clothes are recommended.
  5. Step backwards towards the cliff. Always release the rope slowly while you stay centered in the rope line with your left hand.

Remember, rappelling without a harness or other equipment can be fun, but it's also dangerous and potentially painful, so don't do it if it's not necessary.
