How To Put A Sprocket On A BMX

Learning how to put a sprocket on a BMX bike is quick process that requires very little mechanical skill. The sprocket is the key component in running the BMX bike chain. There are many reasons to change a sprocket. A break in the sprocket is possible as well as changing a sprocket for cosmetics. Putting a sprocket on a BMX bike takes a few tools and a little muscle. This article will walk you through the process needed to change a sprocket on a BMX bike. You will find changing a sprocket to be a minor maintenance activity and that is quickly mastered.

You will need the following for this maintenance activity:

  • BMX bike
  • Sprocket
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench

Steps

  1. Find a sturdy and flat surface for your maintenance. Set the BMX bike down so that the face up peddle is downward. Ensure the BMX bike is secure and won’t move too much. Use the adjustable wrench and loosen the peddle nut near the sprocket.
  2. Loosen the nut fully with your finger and remove the peddle. Next, use the wrench to loosen the sprocket nut and remove the nut with your finger. Using the flathead screwdriver, pry the sprocket off the BMX bike. Remove the chain and allow it to hang.
  3. Take the replacement sprocket and fit it onto the sprocket bolt. Place the nut in place and hand tighten. Replace the chain over the sprocket before tightening. Once the chain is on, test the motion of the chain, by lifting the bike up and peddle with your hands.
  4. You are done if the motion does not adjust the position of the chain over the sprocket. Replace the peddle and hand tighten the nut. Use the wrench to secure the peddle nut.
