How to Catch Lake Erie Walley

Well here we are. Another fishing season is upon us. Catching Lake Erie Walleye can be a daunting task but not an impossible one, even if you are not that familiar with Lake Erie. The mystique and fish stories are way out of proportion to reality.

If you have access to the internet the task is more than manageable. Doing a Google search of Walleye fishing reports will turn up a huge number of hits. Then it’s a matter of narrowing your search down to the few good ones. The ones with correct grammar and glossy pictures are not usually the best ones. I have found the ones from successful Charter Captains and just regular Joes posting on club sites to be the best. Once you have chosen a few posts that seem credible you have three choices. Use your own boat, charter a day with a good Charter Captain or pick a head boat to fish from, The head boat is a large boat 40’ to 50’ that takes a large number of anglers to the hotspots. If you pick a charter or a head boat, try to find out where they are going to fish and see if it jives with the reports you have read.

If you have your own boat and have researched walleye fishing you should have most of the gear you need except bait. If you choose a charter they usually provide everything you need including lunch. If you choose a head boat they provide bait and food for purchase but you must bring your own fishing tackle. If you have never fished Lake Erie a charter or the head boat would be a safe and instructive option.

If you choose to go with your own boat put safety first. Lake Erie can be treacherous and storms come up very quickly. Make sure you have a working marine radio aboard. Make sure you have a current chart of the area you plan to fish, Check the marine weather forecast the night before and the morning of your trip. Monitor the sky and keep abreast of changing weather conditions. Usually there will a lot of boats where the fish are. If you see a lot of boats heading for shore do the same.

Another option to finding the fish is to find a blog or website that puts all the info in one place. There are blogs that gather the information on a daily basis, check it’s accuracy, and provide regular updates. The good blogs offer weather reports and updates if conditions change, photos of Lake Erie that update every minute, fishing reports and photos from the best private and charter captains on the lake. We also provide GPS coordinates where possible. We hope this information has been helpful. Stay safe and good fishing.
