The Modern Graphite Saltwater Fly Fishing Rod is a Very Handy Fishing Tool

Modern saltwater fly fishing rods are not quite the same as the early fly rods that were normally made from lancewood, ash, greenheart and other kinds of hardwoods. In fact, if you go back to when the earliest fly rods were made way back in the eighteen fifties you will find that those original saltwater fly fishing rods were actually made out of Calcutta cane. Then in the nineteen hundreds the saltwater fly fishing rods began to be made from Tonkin and there are even today many of these handcrafted rods still being made that cost at least thousand dollars per rod.

Cane Rods Are Still Much Sought After

The cane saltwater fly fishing rod is still much sought after but requires a lot of maintenance to ensure that it does not get damaged by the elements. In the last fifty years, the modern saltwater fly fishing rod has been made from fiberglass and graphite though to a lesser extent these rods have also been made from steel and from beryllium copper and even from boron.

However, the early graphite saltwater fly fishing rods did not live up to expectations as they still suffered from a few problems which occurred on account of the fact that manufacturers that used graphite had not been able to fully understand the characteristics of the material which then led to persistent problems such as the rods being too stiff or too strong – but, not both.

Today, the graphite saltwater fly fishing rod is a lot more reliable and it is able to provide high performance and this is in the main due to improvement in materials and also because of work done by the aerospace industry that has changed the way that today’s graphite saltwater fly fishing rods are being made.

Of course, you must also choose your saltwater fly fishing rod according to the weather conditions and location of your fishing hotspot and so if you plan on going fly fishing in Belize be sure to use an eight and a half feet to nine foot rod that should be capable of casting seven or eight or even nine weight lines.

And, after purchasing your fly fishing rod don’t forget to also purchase suitable fly fishing rod case which will provide necessary protection to your rod. And, the better you care for your fly fishing rod the longer it will last you. The name of Cabela’s certainly finds mention whenever you go out to purchase a case for your fly fishing rod and so you must at least compare these cases to the others that you will find being sold on the market today.
