The lake is located near the small city of Quitman, Texas on the northern edge of the state in Wood County. This quaint city is a relaxing escape for many trying to get away from the big city for awhile. Lake Fork fishing is famous in this area.

If you're planning a fishing trip to this lake and want to know when the best time to go is, here are some things to consider. This is trophy bass country and bass like to stay in the water temperature between 65 and 75 degrees. If it is too hot they are going to go deeper making it harder for you to catch them. During the summer fishing at night or on a cloudy day would be most favorable.

During springtime the females are spawning and once they are done they go on a feeding frenzy. For the fishermen this means you should have no problem catching your limit. Another good time for fishing is after a rain because it feeds nutrients into the water which the fish need. When the water temperature is favorable for them you will find them near the shallow water just waiting to take your bait.

This lake is mainly known for its Largemouth Bass however there are other varieties of fish residing within the lake as well. There are Bluegill and a couple different species of Crappies and Catfish. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department established this lake and stocked it with over seven hundred thousand Florida Black Bass between 1979 and 1987. Each year around three hundred thousand visitors come here to fish for the big bass.

The best time to fish for the Largemouth Bass is during the spring, fall and winter months. The winter months are the best for the Crappies and the summer months for the Bluegills. Fishing at the lake is sure to be successful any time of the year, it just depends on what you want to fish for.

Every May they host the Legend of Lake Fork tournament for three days. The prizes and cash amount to $237,000. The prizes are for heaviest fish caught with a length of two feet or more. In 2009's tournament the winning bass weighed in at 13.11 pounds. Last year this was only a two day event but due to its success it will be a three day event in 2010.

During various days in February through May the Lake Fork Team Trail Tournament is held here. Each team consists of two people for the five different days. They are allowed to bring back 4 photo fish and or one 24 inch fish per team member. The pot for first place is $500.

The first World Championship Bass Fly Fishing Tournament will be held this year. The month of May has been the chosen month to conduct this event. Fishing is not limited to a boat. You can also use a float tube, pontoon or from the shoreline. Twelve hundred dollars is the purse for first place.
