Bass On The Fly

I went fly fishing a few times this past week while on vacation. My fly rod actually broke while I was setting it up. I was about ready to throw it away but decided to try and use it although it was broken almost in half. I couldn't cast traditionally so I had to improvise. I fished it almost like it was a stick with a fly tied on. By that I mean I was just flipping the fly into the water and twitching the rod and pulling the fly in rather than stripping the line.

I was catching a lot of sunnies and having fun. The pond was covered in lily pads with a lot of lily pads. I would fling the fly into the opening and that is where the fish were. As I was watching the fly, a huge largemouth bass took the fly. As he started to swim away I had too much slack line out so I started to strip the line in. As I went to set the hook I actually turned the fish. As I did I saw the fly pop out of his mouth and the bass took off. It was easily a 4 to 5 pounder! Damn!

The next day I was right back on the sunnies. I must have caught about 4 when all of a sudden my fly disappeared. As I set the hook I knew right away it was no sunny. I started to strip the line in and felt the weight. I knew I was on a bass.

The first of 4 bass I caught on the fly, with a broken fly rod.

As the day went on I caught 3 more bass and countless sunnies. As much fun as sunnies are to catch on the fly nothing beats landing the biggest bass I ever caught on a fly rod. Not to mention on a broken fly rod.

I will definitely be sending an e-mail to the rod company letting them know I am not happy about a rod breaking like that after only two years but I will also let them know that I can still catch fish on a broken rod!
