Every time I go out is a new first for me. This past weekend I took part in my first ever Rainbow trout opener. No although the actual opener was a bit of a let down due to the inclimate weather there was no disappointment in the day after.
I joined my neighbors who refer to themselves as "River Rats" for a 4 am wake up so we could head to their honey hole. We got there first and the Trout were stacked. no sooner had my neighbour cast out his float he was shouting fish on.
The day was pretty much like that, and I watched as there was hook up after hook up.
I tried to do everything they did. I presented the same Roe...the same flies and the same floats...And i just wasn't getting anything. I had hook up but they quickly shook the hook, and in one case i set the hook on the fishes side and after a tough battle he broke free.
Well it was getting long into the morning and i had manged to pull a wee brookie out of the water
Now as you can see this was a laugher compared to what was coming out of the water....but this officially got the smell of 25 years of skunk off me.
So i plugged away and kept changing it up and then the magic hit when i switched to a homemade fly. They loved it and after a few missed hook sets....I managed to set the hook and i was in for the fight of a life time......and after much ado.....I landed the sweetest Bow in the whole world
I am officially hooked on fishing, and can't wait for my future hook ups
