Fishing Bombers

Taunting stubborn Atlantic salmon with large bombers can be traced all the way back to one Elmer Smith of Prince William New Brunswick who designed bombers to be stripped or pulled to cause a wake on the surface.  The history also mentions Elmer was attempting to make representations of small mice, rats or lemmings that had fallen into the river and drowned.

Old Elmer Smith figured putting some action on your bomber would be the best method but in fact dead drifting produces more strikes and entice even the most stubborn salmon to rise at least for a look.

Bombers need to be cast just a little upstream or at a right angle to the fisherman with plenty of slack line. A bomber should move at the same speed as the river flow take care not to let your line become taut even though you may still catch fish this way far more will be taken with a dead drift.

When it comes time for the next cast I personally treat bombers no differently than a emerger or a wet fly. At the end of the drift pattern slowly drag the bomber back toward yourself just for a few moments before your haul it from the surface. The motion resembles the start of a roll cast then a change of mind switching to a regular casting method. I catch plenty of fish this way and instead of just ending my presentation to re-cast I can add a little more flexibility to my technique.

The preferred color in these parts is brown or orange with a white tail and orange hackle but  others colors like green and black work at times so keep plenty of different options in your fly box.

The topic of today's quick tips will ice augers.

1 Always carry a second set of blades and the proper wrench to change them.

2 When drilling with a gas auger be careful not to let it bind. You will regret disregarding this tip after a hour with an axe chopping your auger free.

3 if you over prime a power auger remove the spark plug and pull the starter cord till gas stops blowing out the cylinder. Dry your spark plug install it once again and it should start right up.

Well that's it for this post. Till next time I am FishinDan and thank you for reading...Tight lines.
