Fall Fishing Long Island Lakes

2016/7/18 12:11:35

Let's go back to past autumns on Long Island. Freshwater fishing on the Island is tough, but let me tell you, fall is the best time to go fishing for giant largemouth bass. They're stocking up for the approaching cold winter, and stocking up "hard!"

My favorite bait to throw during the fall is a spinnerbait. Huge bass love spinnerbaits, especially during the fall.

On Long Island, the best place for fall giants is Forge Pond. In this river system, your luckiest spot to catch a big one is dead center of the pond we call 'Forge'. It's not really a pond, technically, it's the river. So, where there is current, there you will find giant largemouths stalking their prey.

Another great lure to throw during the fall on Long Island is a lipless  crankbait. Why lipless? Simple. The lakes aren't deep enough for the crankbaits to dive. Don't get me wrong, you can find a lucky "deep" spot to throw a crankbait, but it's rare. Crankbaits have the same  "spots of luck" (if you will) as the spinnerbaits, mainly because those same spots are the deepest parts of the lakes.

Mornings? I'm glad you brought that question to me. Let's do evenings and mornings together. Bright and early in the morning, as the sun is rising, and right as the sun is setting, a great technique to use is topwater. Bass getting ready for the frigid winter are going to hit anything that looks vulnerable. What is more vulnerable looking than a topwater bait?

  • Torpedoes
  • Buzzbaits
  • Poppers
  • Zara Spooks

All of those perform near to perfection when it comes to the cool water bass.

I hope all of these tips help you! If you need any questions answered, feel free to ask, either on Facebook, Twitter, or here on WFN. Good luck! Stay Reel!
