Set the Hook

Hooks only work well if they are sharp. Take out your tackle box some night while watching W.F.N. and sharpen all the points on your lures and any other hooks that are not new. It will make a difference the next time you feel a strike, by improving your chances of setting the hook.

When you are fishing a lot of rocky, bushy, dead wood, or sunken log areas, constantly check your hook point to make sure it stays sticky sharp. If it is dull, resharpen it so you don’t lose that big one when it does bite.

Ever consider squeezing down the barbs on your flies, lures, spoons etc. You may be surprised that you may hook fish better as you don’t have to drive the hook past the barb. Also “catch and release” becomes very easy and if you do hook yourself or your clothing, the hook should come out easily. But remember to keep your line taunt at all times, without barbs the game is different; you can’t relax the line at all or the quarry is gone.
