Pool Salt Addition Guide: Calculating Salt Needs for a Chlorine-Free Pool

The amount of salt you need to add to your pool depends on the size of your pool and the concentration of salt you want to achieve. The recommended salt level for a swimming pool is between 2,500 and 3,500 parts per million (ppm). If your pool is 10,000 gallons, you would need to add between 25 and 35 pounds of salt to reach the desired concentration.

For every 1,000 gallons of pool water, add 10 pounds of salt.

* For example, if you need to bring the salt level of a 10,000 gallon pool up from 0 to 3,000 ppm, you would need to add 300 pounds of salt (10 pounds per 1,000 gallons x 3,000 ppm).

Important:

Before adding salt, check the water chemistry of your pool to make sure that the pH and alkalinity are at the proper levels. High pH and alkalinity can prevent salt chlorinator from working properly.
