From the Civil War to the Great Outdoors: Lots to See in Beautiful Augusta

2016/7/19 16:18:07

As one of the original Thirteen Colonies and only the fourth state to ratify the Constitution, Georgia has a fascinating past. Situated just on the border of South Carolina, on the banks of the Savannah River, lays the city of Augusta. Augusta is located 150 miles east of the capital city, Atlanta, and epitomizes the "Classic South." Initially a trading post during the colonial times, it boasts historically rich landmarks like pre-civil war mansions.

The historical importance of Augusta is enough to attract any history buff, but "the Garden City" has much more to offer. This charming Southern metropolis also has modern, fun attractions and events to satisfy all interests. Visitors can look forward to arts and culture, shopping, a variety of dining, and many recreation opportunities. This vast variety of activities has led to Augusta being dubbed the best-kept secret of the Savannah River.
The Augusta Museum of History is a fun way to kick off a visit to the city. The museum has many interesting exhibits, including one dedicated to the Godfather of Soul himself, Mr. James Brown. From there, take a ride on the Lady Libby trolley to explore the Historic Downtown area and hear about some of the seedier legends of Augusta's past. The Medical College of Georgia's "bones in the basement" and the famed Haunted Pillar are just two of the many thrilling stories you will be privy to during your ride.

Another must see attraction is the Augusta Riverwalk, featuring restaurants, museums, beautiful gardens and even a children's playground. The Riverwalk is great for an evening of family fun. Or, leave the kids at home and check out Artists Row, which has everything from local fine art and regional crafts to internationally known artists and photography. You are sure to find a unique souvenir or a special piece to add to your collection.

Lively coffee houses and enticing eateries are also dotted throughout the city, paying homage to the South's infamous culinary traditions but also offering more modern, sophisticated foods, sure to please any palate. Take that special someone to Calvert's on Highland Avenue, voted Augusta's most romantic restaurant, for a memorable evening.

The recreation options are also quite varied in Augusta and the surrounding Classic South region of Georgia. You can camp, fish or just check out the 'gators' at Magnoila Springs State Park or catch a play such as Broadway favorite, Chicago at the Imperial Theater downtown. There is also a collection of original short plays by local playwrights, entitled Quickies, featured the last week of April held at Le Chat Noir in Augusta.

There is no shortage of sporting events in the city, as well. Most notably is the Masters golf tournament, Masters tickets are available yearly and the 2012 masters tickets are available now for early April. Exciting Masters golf packages are an excellent way to have an all-inclusive, hassle free visit to Augusta.

Whether you want to brush up on your history or simply stroll down tree lined avenues, Augusta can offer the perfect getaway for any vacationer. So grab your Masters Golf Tournament tickets or front row seats to Chicago and plan your trip to beautiful Georgia today!
