Three Top Tips To Improve Your Golf Game

2016/7/19 16:25:50

If you want to break 80 and shoot like a pro, these three tips are a great start to that process. Many frustrating hours of fruitless practice can be avoided. These are my top three tips that will help you play well and enjoy your golf again.

Having great balance is a vital element in playing great golf.

The most important thing any pro will tell you about golf is that you need to achieve proper balance. It is immaterial whether you are putting or trying to drive 350 yards, you must maintain good balance. All good golfers have one thing in common. Great balance.

The usual cause of bad balance is over swinging or incorrect transfer of weight. Try and resist the temptation to over-hit the ball or swing for the fences. Allow your rhythm, timing and balance do the hard work. A good exercise is to stand on one leg with your eyes closed until you become unbalanced and then swap legs and repeat the process. If you can do this for one minute or more on each leg, you are achieving good balance.

A Good Grip is a Good Start

Having the correct grip gives you power and control over your golf shots. Many players who shoot in the eighties, nineties or beyond, do so due to a bad grip. They often have a good swing, lower body work and tempo but are flawed due to a poor grip. Often players know what a good grip looks like yet still hold the club incorrectly. Most players fail to understand that the awkward position of the left hand is actually correct. If you persist and allow yourself to get comfortable with the proper position, your ball striking will improve dramatically. The amount of pressure you apply to the grip is also a key element. Think of the golf handle as a tube of toothpaste. If toothpaste would come out of it, you are gripping the club too tight.

Your Posture and Set Up Will Play an Important Part in Improving Your Golf

Playing good golf is all about applying the basics properly. Set up and posture are important basic essentials. Even hardened and experienced pros take the time to go through a set up routine that includes ensuring they have the correct posture. There are many things to think about such as position of the feet in terms of width, alignment and forward or back from the ball. The arch of your back, the bending of your knees and your distance from the ball are also key. You are never too good to ignore the need for a good set up and a self checking routine. Consistency depends on it. Even if you feel the need from time to time to check your alignment by placing a club on the ground either square to the ball to in line with the pin to check your aim, never feel you can't or shouldn't do this.

It is important to nail the basics before moving on to more advanced elements of your game, for without understanding and implementing these basic elements you will miss the foundation upon which every great golfer has built. Use these golf tips to act as a guideline and a spur to you on to greater achievement in the game of golf. You may not improve your golf at the pace you would like if you try to do too much on your own. Use the collective wisdom of others who have gone before you.

If you want to really master the game of golf you will realise that these tips are designed only as a starting point from which to begin your journey. There are many elements to this game and you are best advised to take advantage of the numerous coaching manuals and methods by which you can plot and chart your progress. Find one that suits you and your style of learning and be prepared to work hard at what you want to achieve.
