Golf Is A Great Past Time In The World Of Business

2016/7/19 16:26:52

Sometimes being a success in business is about more than just what you do from 9 to 5. A lot can depend on the "extras," like how you treat your clients and the rapport you build with them. Some people use sports to help develop relationships in business. This can work, except if you're not a good athlete.

If you find yourself accepting an invitation to a golf outing from a big client it probably is a good idea to say yes, even if you are new to the sport. To decline might be offensive, so it's best to just "go with it" and do your best.

When you call to accept, be sure to be jovial. You may want to own up to your inability to play. They may appreciate your candor and be more forgiving of a bad performance on the links if you admit it up front.

Ok. So, you've accepted but you still don't know how to play. Don't despair.

You may want to try to learn the fundamentals of the game as quickly as possible. That way you'll feel less foolish when you get on the links. You still won't be a stellar player but you'll feel less inadequate if you at least know the lingo.

It may be helpful to spend a little cash and take a lesson or two from a golf instructor. Their rates range from $8 an hour to $100 for really big names. This will help you to at least know the fundamentals of the game and speak the lingo.

Who knows? You may even find a licensed instructor that is having a deal on his rates to get established.

Be sure to explain to your instructor about your situation so they can tailor your lessons to your short term goals. Naturally, you won't be able to compete with the best after just a few lessons but you will be able to hold your head high at a business golf outing.

So, don't worry. In the end, the most important thing is that you show up with a good attitude and don't take yourself too seriously. You may want to tell your business client that you're a novice. They may appreciate your willingness to go the extra mile for them and reward you with more business.
