Such Language On The Golf Course

I am sure you have been on the course waiting to tee off or maybe having a beverage at the 19th hole after your game, and you hear golfers talking nonsense. Words that do not really make sense like birdies, did you see me birdie the 8th hole, that kind of thing.

Thought you were on the golf course not a bird sanctuary then you hear other words like lie, bogey, double bogey, two of what, what is a bogey. Almost sounds something your mother told you to use a tissue instead of your fingers.

Not to worry I have been there, and it just takes time like anything else concerning golf. Let’s look at some of the more popular slang words you may hear throughout the day.

Golf Slang on the Course

• Ace – this is what all golfers will strive for and be amazed at when it happens to others and will probably never achieve, a hole in one

• Par – strange word not sure if it means anything else but, the number of shots it should take you to finish the hole, of course if you hear talk about the total round par that is just all the holes added together to get the total for the 18 holes

• Bogey – no it is not that, what this means is one shot over par for that particular hole

• Birdie – not really anything to do with birds it means one under par for the hole

• Handicap – as you are new to the game you will most likely have a high handicap; meaning that it puts you on a level playing field with other golfers that are much better than you, evens the score if you will

• Bunker – no not Archie Bunker the hit TV series from the seventies, this is an obstruction aimed at giving you a big head ache trying to get out of; it is generally filled with sand and is situated around the course, usually right in the path of your ball; you will know them when you’re in one

• Beach – sometimes they even make sense a bunker with sand

• Lie – no not time for a nap but perhaps for your ball, where your ball ends up, the position of your ball when it stops bouncing or rolling

• Pin – think about this one all you want chances are you will not come close; the pole in the hole with the flag on it

• Nineteenth Hole - many golfers will tell you that this is the most important slang word in the world of golf especially on a hot day; the nineteenth hole is the clubhouse after the final 18th hole, drinks something to eat, or spin some lies with other golfers

Got that, at the beginning it is all somewhat confusing, but with a little reading and some time, you soon will be talking like that pros at the nineteenth hole and beyond.
