Perfect Putting Demands Putting Concentration

Which golf shot do you think requires more mental work than almost any other shot -- for perfect results? My answer to that questionh will probably surprise you. I think making the perfect putt requires more thought, preparation and mental gamesmanship than almost any other golf shot. Let me explain.

Tournaments are won on the putting green

There is an old saying, "Drive for show, put for money." So much of the drama and excitement of professional golf takes place on the putting green. Championships are won and lost on the greens. The exhilaration a golfer making that long putt to win a tournament palpable -- especially if you are that golfer.

Professional golfers know putting is critical. Many pros have even built a golf green right on their property so they can practice at home with undisturbed putting concentration on all the details of their stroke. They practice the mental game of putting.

Take Phil Mickelson for example. Phil constantly practices his putting. He will practice short putts repeatedly with the goal of making 100 percent of all 3-foot putts. When he walks up to a 3-foot putt in a tournament he is absolutely confident that he will make that putt.

Mental game of putting

Once you hit your approach shot on the green, the mental game of putting begins. As you walk toward the green you assess its slope and look for terraces that will influence your putt. You bend down an mark your ball noting the height of grass and the hardness of the surface. You walk around the ball and the cup taking mental snapshots of the distance and probable break, You replace your ball on the green and crouch down to get closer to a "balls-eye" view of the cup and make a final decision on your target line, distance and ball speed. With practice these this mental preparation for putting becomes second nature.

Then you get into your stance, grip your putter and address the ball. Your putting concentration at this point is total. You make abolutely sure your putter is perfectly aligned along your target line, You stroke the putt and send the ball rolling perfectily along your intended target line/ The ball drops into the cup.

Perfect Putting Demands Putting Concentration

When you thank about all the mental work necessary for perfect putts I think you'll agree that putting concentration is essential for perfect putts and that the putting mental game is at least as challenging as it is for other golf shots.
