The driver golf swing is difficult for the average golfer to learn. The driver is also the longest golf club in the bag. If you have a bag full of clubs, it can be the one which you are always trying to push down to the bottom of the golf bag. At least that was my experience. I should have bought a bigger bag I suppose.

Many handicap golfers have a lot of difficulty playing the golf driver. There is so little loft on the club face, and if you do not strike the ball in the sweet spot every time, there is a strong likelihood that your ball will finish off the fairway. In short, you are less likely to get away with a poorly hit drive with a driver, than you are say, with a four wood.

That is why it is important to know how to play the driver. The driver golf swing is not the same as that used to play the iron clubs in the bag. The irons require more of a downward, punch type of shot. Whereas the driver golf swing needs to be more of a sweeping motion of the hands and arms.

To learn to swing the golf driver, you will need to get used to swinging the driver in a smooth rhythmic fashion, while at the same time swinging the club in a wide arc. To achieve a wide arc means taking the club away from the ball with the hands low to the ground, by keeping the arms outstretched and straight. Keep them straight as far as the hips, then you can begin to cock the wrists.

It is best not to over swing. Many good golf teachers advise you not to take the driver much beyond the three quarter swing position. This is because the pivot is more important, and the shoulders can comfortably turn ninety degrees well before the driver shaft gets near being parallel to the ground. So swinging the club to the horizontal position, and further in some cases, once you have achieved a full shoulder turn, is wasted effort.

All that is left to do then, is begin the downswing with the hips, and not the hands. Leading the driver down in this way will keep the wrists cocked until they are about waist height, at which point they are unwound rapidly to give you the maximum club head speed needed to hit the drive a long way down the fairway.

This last part of the driver golf swing is called the golf swing release, and it is a good exercise to practice the action as often as you can. You do not need to be on the golf course to practice it, and you do not need to use a golf driver either. You can practice this snapping action with the wrists anywhere.

Rhythm and timing are the two most important elements of a consistent golf swing. It takes practice and dedication to learn the driver golf swing, but it can be done, and you will enjoy you golf more if you become competent with the golf driver.
