The Correct Golf Ball Position – Steps You Need To Learn

2016/7/20 14:25:20

After you achieved the proper posture and are standing at the suitable distance from the ball, it is time to discuss where the ball should be positioned in your stance. For beginners and intermediate players, I propose that you position the ball in the center, or slightly forward of center of your stance. If you are a right handed player and are wearing a golf shirt with a logo on the left chest area, the logo is a fine reference point for where the ball should be positioned. If you play left handed, position the ball on a line just to the right of your sternum.

Do you know why is  the position of the ball so important? To appreciate why ball positioning is so crucial, it helps to be familiar with what goes on at the bottom of your swing, which is the point at which your club meets the ball and ground. Your swing moves in a circular motion, because golf is a side-on sport. Side-on also indicates that you are standing to the side of the ball when you strike it.

If you have executed the swing correctly, would have much the same effect on the ball. The difficult part is getting the swing to have the correct arc so that when the swing bottoms out, the club head holds to the inside portion of the ball. Depending on the arc of your swing, the club can bottom out in three spots - the low point (toward the back of your stance), the midpoint (near the middle of your stance), and the high point (toward the front of your stance).

Those who draw or hook the ball tend to bottom the club out a little more toward the low point of the swing. This means the club comes more from the inside and then hits the inside portion of the ball. Because of the trail of the club, the ball flight of the right handed player sometimes start toward the right and curve to the left.

When players slice the ball, the trail of the club comes from outside the ball back to the inside, causing these players hit across the ball. The sidespin causes the ball flight to curve clockwise for a right handed golfer and counterclockwise for a left handed golfer. However many slicers do not realize that placing the ball forward in their stance causes an even more pronounced slice. Why is this so? The main reason is because the club head moves in a circular path. During the downswing, once the club head passes your sternum, its circular path begins to arc toward your front foot. Hence moving the ball forward causes the club to cut across the ball from an even sharper angle, producing extra spin.

On the other hand, if you locate the ball farther back in the stance, you have a much better chance of getting the club into the back of the ball sooner, with less spin. That is precisely why I inform beginning and intermediate players who are more likely to slice the ball, that if they err in their ball position, err toward the middle of their stance, or even a couple of inches back from the middle. Experienced players normally can play the ball a few inches forward in their stance, because the path of their swing tends to come from the inside and they usually draw the ball.

Last but not least, when you happen to be contented with the new swing and begin to hitting draws or hooks, you should position the ball slightly forward in your stance. How far the ball can move forward depends on the individual player and swing. However no matter which level of player you are, the ball must never be positioned out toward your front foot.

Have a excellent game ahead !
