The Steps to becoming a better golfer can be long and drawn out with many people taking longer than others to get the basics and then advanced shot techniques mastered. There are many advanced techniques that golfers will be required to call upon when they are playing a round of golf and therefore you'll want to learn these at some point so you are better rounded golf player.

Of course no two golfers are the same; there can be natural quirks about anyone's shots such as a natural fade or draw that you may have to compensate for if your shots are consistently going to one side of your target. The best way to track your progress as you play is to follow the status of your golf handicap. The golf handicap is something many casual golfers will not bother with unless their local golf club states players must have an officially recognised golf handicap.

This is done because some courses are more exclusive and will aim to market themselves to serious golfers. This doesn't mean that as a beginner in the sport that you will be turned away from any courses, getting golf lessons can be done at most golf courses where the resident professional will be able to give you a helping hand when you start out.

Getting your golf handicap recognised as soon as possible is the best way to chart your progress, as you improve your handicap will lower, it may go up if you haven't played in a while or are struggling with particular courses and conditions.

Another good use of your golf handicap is noticing how any efforts you have made to better your golf game such as working on your putting or sand shots can have an instant impact on your golf handicap. It is quite common that as golfers learn to handle problem areas of their game that they will see a drop in their handicap as they have become a more rounded golfer able to effectively make a number of shots with ease.

Getting your golf handicap officially recognised is not that hard at all; many services are now based on the internet so you can get your handicap calculated online with ease. In most cases you only need to turn in your latest few scorecards, some services require as little as ten scorecards but obviously the more you hand over means that there will be more data for the calculator to go off, making a more accurate judgement.
