Well Balanced Callaway FT-iZ Driver review

Callaway Golf says that in its never-ending mission to find more distance and accuracy for golfers, its engineers used an entirely new design to produce the FT-iZ driver which it revealed at the PGA Merchandise Show last week.

Callaway FT-iZ Driver is well above average in distance, and it'ss off the charts in technological kitsch. I have a couple of drivers at home that are longer than this one, but they were built specifically for maximum distance, and do not sport anywhere near the forgiveness of this club. The distance owes a lot not only to the super hot face, but also to the excellent choice of shafts. Better yet–the kick point to torque ratio will have the shaft feel like a 100 MPH Swing loaded her on before the rather sweet feeling release at impact.

Callaway FT-iZ Driver is very well balanced for a Composite Driver. Once again, the shaft deserves a lot of the credit here. Callaway uses what they call "‘Polar Weighting" across the club head to achieve optimal balance." Polar Weighting is just a fancy term for weight concentrations on the front and back. The club's face makes up a full 58% of the club head's weight. The rear and back center weight take up another 16%. That means that that entire "Compression Cured Carbon Body" is a mere 26% of the club head's weight. Still, the club head is pretty obvious in its location throughout the swing. At a rather hefty D4 swing weight, this club is no featherweight.

Callaway threw everything they had into Callaway FT-iZ Driver. It's a pretty amazing driver too. I've got clubs that are longer, but not as forgiving. I've got a club or two that are as forgiving, but not as long. This club is well balanced between distance, forgiveness, and actual balance of the club itself. I hit plenty of solid shots that launched high and flew off the face with a healthy-sounding thwack, but also a fair few that were less than impressive – shots resulting from that mild apprehension at address.
