The Game of Golf - Ryder Cup Hospitality - Ryder Cup Golf Hospitality

Combining marketing with the international golf spectacle nine years in the making is just Terry Matthews' way of having fun.

Why does a man who doesn't golf -- who is impatient with the very idea of spending five hours on a course -- spend a fortune to host the Ryder Cup, one of sport's most-watched events? To pose the question is to misunderstand Terry Matthews entirely. For him, this is mostly about marketing. Matthews has plowed more than a quarter of a billion dollars into the Celtic Manor Resort, a massive hotel and sporting complex located at his birthplace on the outskirts of Newport, Wales. He fully expects the investment to pay off. The Ryder Cup's estimated television audience of 700 million-plus will certainly help with name recognition."We'll be able to market the Celtic Manor's association with the Ryder Cup forever," Matthews says. The Ryder Cup is an 83-year-old tradition that pits 12 of Europe's best golfers against a dozen top-ranked U.S. players.

The three-day competition, which begins Oct. 1, will be played on the Twenty Ten golf course -- a 7,493-yard long monster built specifically for this year's version of the Ryder Cup.

Sergio Garcia fears his run of five straight Ryder Cup appearances since making his debut as a 19-year-old in 1999 looks set to end.A desperate run of form has seen the Spaniard drop from second to 36th in the world in the last 15 months and he doubts whether he would even merit a wild card from European captain Colin Montgomerie for the event at Celtic Manor in October.

Out of touch: Sergio Garcia

He could only manage a 77 yesterday in the first round of the BMW International Open in Munich when joint leaders Bradley Dredge of Wales and Scotland's Peter White shot 64s.Garcia manager Carlos Rodrigues said: 'He isn't enjoying his golf at all. He has even said that if Colin Montgomerie were willing to offer him a wild card he's not sure he would be of any help to the European team.'

Sunday's fourth round will start 75 minutes earlier than planned so the golfers can watch England's World Cup tie against Germany.
