The Ben Hogan Swing movement Mystery and can Golfers utilize it?

Ben Hogan is one of the great golfers in history and was one of the foremost professional golfers through the 40s and 50s. Though diminutive in physique he's certainly one of the great shot strikers in golf history, and even in his younger days took part in longest-drive competitions. Also, he was alleged to have the "swing secret" which permitted him to hit a golf ball continuously, and to this day that secret has quite a few theories regarding its exact nature. Since he was a private man, Hogan never disclosed everything he knew.

Since all players are seeking that cure-all that will enable them to hit reliable golf shots, many will attempt to take something from what Hogan purportedly discovered. To probe more into this we should know the back story of what Hogan was looking for. When he was young he applied a strong grip, and even though it allowed him to hit a golf ball far this also caused horrible "snap hooks". It is said the solution for correcting it was a wrist movement called "cupping under" in the back swing. He did this when using a weaker grip.

The next element of the "secret" had been to use the right knee to initiate the golf swing. He believed this right knee movement was likely required to create a correct wrist action. This took away the likelihood of him hooking his ball and allowed a more confident golf swing.

Exactly what can the average golfer take from that? Essentially we probably cannot take too much. Using Hogan's new swing he was able to routinely shape his ball left to right, and that worked for him. Many people particularly when we age become more yardage-challenged, and if we could we'd form the shot right to left to get more roll. Therefore while it worked for Hogan it probably wouldn't be the answer to most recreational golfer's needs.

Even though Hogan "swing secret" probably will not help us there are several additional things the great Ben Hogan has shared with us which we can use. The Five Lessons of Golf Instruction could very well be the most extensively read golf tutorial ever created, and it's outstanding. Another thing we can take from Hogan is that, yes he happened to be a great ball striker, but he's known to be among the hardest workers in the game of golf. He was a golfer that continuously worked on his technique, and in so doing he grasped the golf swing movement as well as anyone ever. The best lesson from Ben Hogan is: working hard is what really pays dividends.
