Golf Tournament Trophies Can Be Surprisingly Unusual

Golf tournament trophies are symbols given to a winner who has triumphed over a course or their own personal limitations. While trophy styles vary in styles and sizes some very simple items have become models for these cherished mementos. The oldest trophy in golf was the British open which had a claret jug as a trophy, is hardly usual and yet, fitting.

Not every golf trophy is traditional, beautiful or in some cases identifiable, there are no standards for trophies and probably for such an individual oriented game this is entirely appropriate. Of course a few prizes are easily identified such, and are valued items, such as a gold plated golf ball or a gold plated golf club. However most organizations do not go to that extreme even for tournaments. Some trophies are traditional such as plaques or statuettes made of metal, wood or acrylic these tend to be less expensive and more common.

Unusual trophies abound in golf and one of the more interesting is the U. S. Masters Green Jacket. It certainly is not designed to fit on the mantle or in a display case but instead to be worn. The winner of the U. S. Masters is given the right to wear the green jacket for a year and then though the jacket is returned they may wear it while visiting Augusta. In addition a small gold medal is also awarded and that trophy does not need to be returned.

While traditionally styled trophies are common enough occasionally trophies may be so unusual the winner is unsure what to do with it. The Abu Dhabi trophy is one such unique prize. It was made with a very large silver base with a gold golf ball perched atop it and a very large eagle atop the golf ball.

Similarly, the Dubai Desert Classic trophy is non-traditional and very large. This exquisitely crafted silver eastern style container is more than half the size of the player attempting to lift it in 2009. That particular golf trophy would take up a great deal of mantle space.

The rule seems to be that there are no rules when it comes to these coveted prizes. While there may be little real value attached to them they are priceless to the recipient. In most cases a winner will display the trophy as prominently as they can no matter how it is styled because it means they have triumphed.

A small organization might not be able to commission a unique statue for their trophy. They might choose to go with a traditional styled crystal or wood trophy and the winner would still treasure it. There appear to be no hard and fast rules when it comes to what a trophy looks like or what it actually is, a green jacket, or a replica symbolizing the Barclay Bank might hold equal places of honor on a the mantle of a golfer.
