Golf Club Covers: How to Choose The Best Type For Your Needs

Golf club covers also known as head covers primarily serve the purpose of protecting your clubs. When you add a cover to your club it protects the head of the club from scratches, dents, and dust all which can affect your clubs performance. There are essentially two types of golf club head covers: form fitting and loose fitting. In this article we will discuss the purpose of each and how to know which is best for your needs.

Form fitting gold club heads are made for specific clubs. For example, if you had a 460cc driver, you would need to buy a 460cc driver headcover and you wouldn’t be able to fit that cover correctly on a hybrid club. Form fitting covers generally offer better protection because they are made to fit snug on the club head and can be secured tightly with zippers, snaps, or Velcro.

The materials they are made of also vary and can range from high end leather to neoprene materials. Even the level of padding can vary. Generally form fitting golf club head covers for irons have less padding as those clubs are a bit more robust. Your chief clubs you are looking to protect are your woods and your putter.

If you are an avid golfer and are lugging your clubs around through airports, in and out of your trunk, and banging them around while you drive the golf cart, then form fitting headcovers is the best way to go.

Loose fitting headcovers also do have their purpose. These head covers are not made to be club specific. For example, you can take a loose fitting head cover and stick it on your driver and then take it off and put it on your putter. These loose fitting headcovers are made to be universal and normally have quite a bit of padding and protection. Think of it like shoving a gold club inside of a medium teddy bear.

As a matter of fact a lot of loose fitting headcovers are that precisely; a teddy bear with a tightly knitted sheath that grasps on to the shaft of the club. These pull off and go one pretty easy and often provide a good level of entertainment in addition to proving some protection of your golf club head. While they do protect against scratches, dents, and dust they are just not quite as much of a snug fit, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say they would fall of easily either.

More often than not people who use loose fitting golf club head covers use them to express their personality on the golf course often in the form of their favorite superhero, sports team, or movie. They can also help differentiate your bag of clubs from everyone else’s. The other added benefit for me is the psychological factor. Every time I reach for my driver and I have to unsheathe it from the Godzilla head cover I feel like I am going to crush the ball 1000 yards! My buddy feels the exact same way about his NFL golf club covers, but I personally think an iconic character amps you up a bit more.

If you are looking to interject some personality and style into your game than loose fitting headcovers maybe more of what you are looking for, but there are some fun form fitting covers. If you are interested in finding some golf club head covers with some character and style then what you want to do is find novelty golf club covers or funny golf club head covers. That’s most often how they are characterized on the internet. Of course many pro shops will also have some fun head covers, but will most likely be a bit more serious and offer less of a selection.
