The Better Golf Swing

How do you get a better golf swing? What are the keys to having a consistent, repeatable golf swing? I have been golfing for over 20 years and I always ask myself these questions. How can I get the better golf swing? Most golfers can agree that you can never have, or keep, the perfect golf swing. It’s something we all have to work for and really work at if we want to get better and have a consistent, repeatable golf swing. I thought I would share a few of my favorite tips and tricks that have helped me lower my handicap and get me closer to THE better golf swing.

Tip #1 – Course Management

The biggest reason you want the better golf swing is so you can lower your handicap. The first tip isn’t really about the golf swing but more about course management. This tip helped me cut at least 3 shots off of my handicap. When you are standing on a par-4 or par-5 tee box you probably have your driver in your hand, right? Most people have a favorite mid to low iron that they feel comfortable hitting no matter what, right? So, the best thing to do is to figure out how far you have to hit the ball off the tee to get to your favorite mid or low iron. This may mean you don’t hit your driver; you may want to hit a 5-wood or hybrid to get to your favorite distance. An example: You hit your favorite 7-iron 150 yards. You are playing a 350 yard par 4. You only need to hit a 200 yard shot off the tee so use a hybrid instead of the driver. Too many times golfers hit their driver off the tee when they don’t have to. Then they find themselves in the trees or fairway bunkers trying to salvage a bogey, or worse.

Tip #2 – Know Your Distances

This tip goes along with the previous one. If you are going to be successful at course management you have to know how far you hit your clubs. It is extremely important to take some time at the range and log the distance you hit each of your clubs. You may not hit them all the exact same length every time but get your best 'average' distance out of each club. I always play with someone, or over hear someone say, “What club did you hit?” They will then hit the same club. Don’t get caught up in your ego; just because your buddy hits his 7-iron 180 yards doesn’t mean you can. Know your distances and play your clubs to those distances. This will give you the best chance at getting to the green in regulation.

Tip #3 – Practice With Your Wedges

The best way to lower your handicap is to improve your short game. The better golf swing does encompass those little “strokes” you take on and around the green. If you want to make more putts you need to get closer to the hole. If you improve your wedge play you will do just that. Think about how many times you use a wedge per round. Keep track one day, it will surprise you. If you focus on improving your wedge play from 30-yards and in, you will most assuredly lower your handicap. Make sure you have a variety of wedges in your bag (52, 56, 58, &/or 60). Practice with each of them and get a feel for how far the ball flies and how far it rolls afterward. The more options you have around the green the better the chance you have of choosing the easiest shot to get the job done.
