Augusta National Golf Club
Augusta National Golf Club has been rated by Golf Digest as the top golf course in all of the country. Set in Georgia, it is the host of the highly anticipated PGA Master's Tournament every single year. It has been amazing golfers with its old-style Southern charm since 1933. Nervertheless, the course is not without its controversy. The private golf course has somewhere in the neighhood of 300 members. There is no membership application to the club, as inclusion is by personal invitation only. At one time, the course had required for all caddies to be black, and did not permit black members until 1990. Even now, no girls have been invited to be members of Augusta National Golf Club. These distresses have pressed a number of males to cancel their membership, and even motivated the Olympic Games Committee to look at whether or not golf lives up to all of the Olympic principals of being a friendly, inclusive sport.
Pine Valley Golf Club
Pine Valley Golf Club is documented to be the second-best golf club in all of the United States by Golf Digest. It was originated in 1913 in New Jersey by leisure golfers. This club is also invitation only and will not induct female members, though, females are allowed to come with members as visitors on Sunday afternoons. The golf course is popular for holes including "Hell's Half-Acre," a barren stretch on the seventh hole which is really difficult.
Shinnecock Hills Golf Club
Third ranked on Golf Digest's list is Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southhampton on Long Island, NY. The golf course was dreamed up by American business persons in the late 19th century. Made on Native American property, the golf course is subject to a land debate. The land is also on the US National Register of Historic Places. Shinnecock Hills was one of the first courses to let females to play, having a different women's course until 1901. Even today, it is seen as a gathering place of the wealthy.
Playing Golf at a Private Club
While not all of us may have the chance to be inducted to a private golf course, or be able to afford the membership charges, playing at these greens is the desire of most players. Even with their choosiness, or possibly because of it, these courses have found their way to the top of America's golf rankings.
