Garcia: I do want to play!

Garcia: "I do want to play!"

They're a fickle bunch, golfers, aren't they?

First Tiger Woods decides he does want to play in the Ryder Cup, now just two days after claiming he's going to take an extended break from the game, Sergio Garcia has admitted he would also like to compete at Celtic Manor.

The Spaniard, who two years ago was number two in the world, has slumped to 50th in the rankings and had decided to take two months out following this week's PGA Championship.

"If I don't play the Ryder Cup I will take time off until the Castellon Masters at the end of October," he said, changing his tune rather quickly.

"If I'm fortunate enough to make the Ryder Cup team I'll definitely be there. If I win that probably means I'll get myself into the team.

"I haven't really looked at it. I just want to go out there, enjoy it, and try to do well.

"Whatever happens, happens. If I make it by myself great, hopefully I do enough for Monty to choose me."

Meanwhile, the European captain has expressed his regret at Garcia's failure to play his way onto the team, and has already accepted his likely absence.

"You feel that Sergio would not just be pencilled in, but permanent ink in the team at the start of the campaign," he told Sky Sports News.

"He hasn't played well, of course he hasn't, I think he's quite right he wants away from the game and I respect him for that.

"As I've always said, a team without Sergio could well be a weaker one. It's a shame because he's got that passion that his compatriots Seve [Ballesteros] and [Jose Maria] Olazabal have had.

"It's a shame, but we look forward to the return of Sergio in two years time when we play this thing again."
