Golf Club Buying Guide – Putters

Everyone will have likely seen a nail-biting conclusion to a golf match or tournament on the putting surface. Putting can make or break a round of golf and is often the shot that most frustrates golfers. As well as making sure you practice on the putting green prior to your round it’s equally important that you have the right tools for the job, having the right putter is not a set in stone deal as all golfers are different.

Choosing a putter should be done once you know how you prefer to putt; there are traditionally two varieties of putter: Toe balanced and Face balanced. Toe balanced putter are suited for golfers who prefer to putt from a taller stance, face balanced putters are used by golfers with a more crouched stance.

Both putting styles are perfectly acceptable and you shouldn’t feel you have to conform to one particular style, even down to the way golfers grip their putters varies so you should always buy a putter that suits your stance and not the other way round.

One of the key things to remember is that your putter should sit flat on the ground when you are in your comfortable stance, if only the toe or the heel of the club is touching the ground then your club could be too long or too short. Whilst it is possible to alter your stance it is much better to have a club that suits you perfectly as opposed to having to remember to change your stance.

This can affect your composure and ability to relax when it comes time to sink that long putt to win the game so you should try out different length clubs and if you find that one is too short or long then you can usually get them customised to get you the perfect alignment with the ball and the ground.

When you come to buy a putter there are a wealth of different shapes and designs all claiming to be the best choice but the only way you’ll find out which one is right for you is by testing it out and what you like the look of. Most golf shops will have a little testing area, most often by the putters for sale, try hitting a few shots and see what feels most comfortable, the weight and shape of the club as well as the face can all affect your putting ability.

As with most golf club purchases you need to be sure that you are comfortable with the club and as long as this remains true when purchasing a putter then you are going to be on your way to nailing lengthy putts to win games, perhaps even championships.
