How To Repair That Golf Hook

There’s no doubt about it, if you have a golf hook in your swing, it must be fixed ASAP or your game will never get better. Figuring out ways to sort out the golf hook, however, is not as hard as it appears. Through our research, we have come up with what we believe are the best ways to kill that “duck hook” once and for all. So don’t give up, we’re going to help you through the entire operation.

In a golf hook, the ball is twirling wildly “right-to-left” off the tee. The more revolutions it makes per second, the more severe the curve to the left will be. Our first check will be on the club face. If the club face is not “square” at impact the resulting shot will never fly straight. Our attention should now focus on how we get the club face “square” when we meet the ball.

The pros know how important the grip is in getting rid of a hook. Here’s the most effective way to see where you are:

Take your set-up stance with your driver. For those of us who are right-handed we’ll try to see where the left hand is on the club. While in a relaxed stance, count how many knuckles you can see. If you can find at least two, you have a good grip, so this is not where the problem is located. When three or four knuckles are showing, you must take corrective action to change it.

Here’s the trick.look down the shaft of the club to the face. Is it “square” to the target line? Now, back to the knuckles…if you only see two, then it should be. However, you should be in this position at impact. You may move your hands one way or the other when you actually bring the club to the ball on the downswing. Now take a slow swing at the ball and picture the correct position of the hands at the bottom. You have to be willing to accept the change in the grip if you are going to improve. Make a conscious effort to welcome this change. It will feel right in no time.

If there are no difficulties with your grip, that’s fantastic! The problem isn’t in the way that you are holding the club. The next thing to find out is your balance – at your set-up and throughout your swing. Feel the distribution of the weight in your feet. Picture yourself looking over the side of a cliff. That’s the proper amount of lean you should have. This leads to a smooth turn and keeps everything in line throughout the entire swing. If your balance is off when you make impact, you will undoubtedly hook the golf ball.

The straighter the left arm, the straighter the shot will be, and the less likely the end result will be a golf hook. But remember, a straight arm doesn’t mean a “stiff” arm. Just ask someone to look at your left arm through your swing. Throw that “chicken wing” where it belongs – in the trash – at impact!

We are confident that one of the above drills will fix your golf hook problem. All that is left to do, is do it. Remember, make minor changes at a time on the practice range and you’ll be seeing the ball fly straight down the fairway in no time!

When you need more in-depth coaching on stopping the golf hook, then make a promise to yourself and rid this nasty habit from your game.
