How to Wear Soccer Socks Right

2016/7/27 15:54:15

Soccer socks may seem to be less-important items of a soccer outfit but they really play a major role in protecting your feet from blisters and injuries. For you to fully enjoy the game, you must feel comfortable and protected down at your feet. Though it may seem to be a no-brainer, there really is a proper way of donning on a pair of soccer socks.

In summary, you must have shin guards beneath a pair of soccer socks before putting on and securely lacing your soccer shoes. Now you can do this in two ways:

The first method is to strap on the shin guards first and then put on your socks.

The second method is to put on your soccer socks first before inserting your shin guards.

Whichever method you prefer, keep in mind the following tips:

 • The hem or upper elastic band of your socks should go below the knee so that they won't get in the way of your blood circulation at the knee area. Socks which go around the knee also tend to impede knee movement. The right spot for your soccer socks to go around is the small bump just under your kneecap where your patella tendon meets your shin bone.
 • Your soccer socks should also be above the calf so as not to roll down during the middle of the game. If your socks are too long, you can simply roll it back down or fold it over the top of the shin guards.
 • Make sure, then, that your socks are just where they should be-- below the knee and above the calves.
 • It is important to note that your socks should fully cover your shin guards. This is because another important function of soccer socks is to keep the shin guards in place.
 • Some soccer players like to put on a pair of ankle socks first, strap on the shin guards next and finally put on a pair of soccer socks. This seems to give the most comfortable and snug feel for some players.
 • There are also players who are particularly sensitive to the feel of shin guards and develop skin irritations. If you are one of these people, a handy solution would be to wear a "sock tube" beneath the shin guard. A pair of sock tubes can be made by cutting the foot portions off a pair of soccer socks.
