Scuba Diving: The Importance Of Buoyancy Control

2016/7/26 16:44:30

One of the most essential skills in scuba diving is buoyancy control. Every experienced and professional diver knows that maintaining neutral buoyancy under the water is the nirvana of scuba diving. Buoyancy control is the secret of those divers who are effortlessly floating inches above the bottom, moving harmoniously with the water, and as if having all the energy to swim around all day. It is essentially and arguably the most important skill every diver should master.

So the question lies there, why is it so important to have good buoyancy control? Here are the reasons why:

1. To keep you safe underwater. Whether you are a novice or an expert diver, you will never miss the warning that scuba diving has its risks. And from here enters the concept of buoyancy control, which is a main component to safer diving. It will allow you to stay safely at the depth of the water you planned to reach. Adhering to the depth limits is a rule of thumb and is clearly important to keep you safe within the recreational limits.

2. You are helping the environment. How? Maintaining good buoyancy control lessens the chance of you harming the marine life the coral reefs especially. If you are struggling with buoyancy, you are most likely to make contact with the reef and possibly cause damage to it and to yourself. The thing there is, if you are enthusiastic about the underwater world, you should earn enough respect to the existing life in it and enough responsibility not to damage it in any way you can.

3. You spend less air. Having a good grasp of buoyancy control allows you to make slow and controlled ascents. It will make you feel more relaxed along with the thinking that you are certain about controlling the expansion of air in your BCD or Buoyancy Compensator Device. Moreover, good buoyancy makes you feel more relaxed and so you don’t get to easily feel exhausted, allowing you also to spend less energy, and ultimately help you conserve air in your tank. Thus, extending your overall dive time.

4. Improve your overall diving experience. The main point of scuba diving is that you get to witness stunning ecosystem that exists under the sea. And so as pointed above, if you have neutral buoyancy, you feel more in control. You are making the most out of your diving experience when you have extended amount of dive time and just find yourself just sinking in the wonders of what you are seeing in the underwater world.

5. Expand into other areas of recreational diving. Once you have mastered buoyancy control, you can then expand to some other recreational diving areas like underwater photography, underwater navigation and fish and creature identification. It will be a lot easier for you to do such activities.

Indeed, scuba diving has many technicalities and nuances that you need to learn. Although diving is designed to be enjoyable and worthwhile for those involved, careful attention should be given to developing the required skills that ensure underwater safety.
