Croatia may seem a little off the beaten track when it comes to scuba diving, in fact it’s not on most people’s vacation hot spot lists. That’s precisely why it would make an amazing vacation destination. Croatia has everything you might want when it comes to a summer holiday spot.

Perfect summer temperatures, thousands of miles of shoreline, lots of sun and its located in central Europe. Croatia is about two hours from Venice and you can also get to Budapest and Vienna in the blink of an eye. Add to all this the fact that this is a great place to scuba dive and scuba diving in Croatia just becomes really attractive.

Essential Information

Even though you may have diver’s qualifications at home you need a diver license when scuba diving in Croatia. This is an important step and cannot be ignored due to a revision in Croatian law. You do have to pay a fee for this license to scuba dive in Croatia but it is quite minimal and will be valid for an entire year.

There are certain areas that are off limits when scuba diving in Croatia. Anywhere less than a 100 meters within an anchored warship or protected military facilities on a coastal edge is not allowed. Diving is allowed within areas that are clearly marked with an orange or red buoy or diving flag.

The Best Dive Spots

There are definitely places that you cannot miss when scuba diving in Croatia. The famous sunken passenger ship in Istria is a must see. The passenger ferry, the Baron Gautsch, sunk in 1914 and is quite well preserved and fun to explore. You can even enter the ship, but experience is a must and it is not advisable for beginners to visit this site.

If you would like to see diverse and beautiful sea life then you should make a stop at Kornati. This is one of the most beautiful places to scuba dive; there are many types of corals and sponges as well as fishes. The visibility here is amazing, often you can see up to 40 meters ahead as the waters are so crystal clear.

There is also a sea pond in Susac, which is the main attraction at this dive spot. It is a wonderful place to explore and the sea pond can be accessed through an underwater tunnel. There is an underwater wall at this spot as well that is filled with sea organisms. You really can’t go wrong when scuba diving in Croatia.
