Dive Around The Clock at Redondo

Although this was my first opportunity to dive the 24 hour exstravaganza, I jumped in with both fins.  My goal was to complete four dives in little over ten hours.  Unfortunately, due to fatigue, I was only able to complete three dives in about seven hours, with a total bottom time of 3:04:00 hours.  Each dive was faily deep:

  • Dive one:  7:00 PM, 94 fsw, 59 minutes
  • Dive two: 11:00 PM, 84 fsw, 66 minutes
  • Dive three: 3:00 AM, 75 fsw, 59 minutes

Redondo is a popular dive spot in Puget Sound located about 25 minutes south of downtown Seattle.  There is excellent easy beach / shore access for divers and boaters, plenty of inexpensive or free parking, and a nice seafood restaurant and bar for finishing off a perfect day of diving.

Many local dive clubs in the area utilize this spot for numerous certification dives.  Most popular are Beginning Open Water Certification, Advanced Open Water Certification, and Rescue Diver Certification.  Although many other certifications can be obtained at this location also.  Every weekend you can catch many, many casual divers to professional technical divers enjoying this wonderful local dive spot.

As I said I completed three dives during the event.  My goal was to complete four dives, but by 5:00 AM I was quite fatigued and felt it was not safe to attempt any more dives.  Fortunately, as is always the case when I dive, I had my camera with me for each dive.  I was very interested to learn what might be occuring down there at three O'Clock in the morning.  I was not to be dissapointed!  Actually, I was amazed and awed at the activity of the life the
later it got.  With each consecutive dive more and diverse life emerged.  Hunting and feeding at night in the dark is the norm for most creatures of the deep and I was able to capture some of it with my camera.  The Rose Anenome to the left was shot on my first dive of the night, at around 7:30 PM. This is a fine example of the beautiful, colorful life that exists just
below the suface.
