Navigating Narrow Channel Bends: Safe Maneuvers & Collision Avoidance

Actions when Approaching a Bend at Narrow Channels

Bends and sharp curves require special maneuvers because of possible vessel traffic coming from the opposite direction and reduced space to maneuver. Be particularly attentive about avoiding:

- collisions when navigating the bends in channel; and

- the dangers to small craft from large ship suctions and waves. Avoid passing or approaching large vessels in their immediate vicinity and at bends at narrow channels.

- Keep to that side of the narrow channel which lies on the starboard side of your vessel.

- Slow down the vessel (unless the bank can clearly be seen around a river bend with no other traffic);

- Sound prolonged or repeated blasts;

- Stop the engines when coming in sight of another vessel until she is passed: and/or

- Proceed at such a safe and slow speed in order to stop within half the visible range: if necessary in emergency reverse engines.
