throwing a baseball correctly

Question
My boys are 5 and 6 and I am looking for good throwing tips for children so young.  Specifically, at what age should I worry about gripping the ball with 2 fingers.  Also, my 6 year old is letting go of the ball about 6 inches too soon and gets a lolipop throw instead of an accurate crisp throw.  I am having trouble conveying my message through to him.  Any tips would be helpful.  Thanks

Answer
Damon,

At 5 and 6, if they can throw the ball in the right direction, that is great.  If they throw 1 out of 2 or 3 in the right direction, great!  A 5 and 6 year old does not necessarily have the ability or capacities to learn mechanics and implement them to 100% success.  Teach him the basic fundamentals of throwing.  Reinforce it each time.  A good drill is to get on one knee, the throwing hand knee, and the other knee up with the foot on the ground.  You will be about 10-15 feet apart.  Face your partner and then rotate the upper body so that the glove shoulder faces the target.  With the ball and arm back in the proper launch position, turn and throw the ball easily to the target and follow through properly.

This is the best way to teach good mechanics to a kid.  Then stand up and throw the same way.   I did this with my 7 year old daughter and she wound up having the most accurate arm on her softball team of 7-9 year old girls.

As far as a 2 finger grip.  My son is now 15, he is a left handed pitcher throwing in the low to mid 80's with fastball.  He has a wicked curve and a good changeup.  His 2 seam fastball moves away from right handed hitters up to 10 inches at times.  He threw a 3 fingered fastball until he was 12 years old.  Control is the key.  If they have to hold with 3 or 4 fingers to have control, do it.
