Improving Pitch Velocity in 13-Year-Old Baseball Players

Question
my son is age 13 and when he is put in to pitch he will throw strikes and gets ahead of most hitters but the problem is he lacks in velocity he doesnt throw hard and sometimes he does get rocked i was wondering what there is out there to help him get some velocity

Answer
Don-
If he's only 13, I would suggest that you work on making his mechanics as efficient as possible. Look for some books or record some games of pitchers that resemble your sons pitching style. Watch those and incorporate some things into his pitching.
As far as in game adjustments, I would say that he needs to keep the ball DOWN! When a pitcher can keep the ball at or below mid-thigh in a hitters strike zone, he can get a lot more groundballs. It takes a lot more groundballs to score a run than say... a homerun!
When pitchers start to tire, they usually leave the ball up in the zone and get hit. When you see that he is getting tired, remind him to keep the ball down in the zone.

good luck
