Understanding Pitching from the Stretch for Young Baseball Players
Question
I was reading some of your threads re: pitching technique for 10 year olds. You mention "pitching from the stretch". I'm not sure what that means. Can you recommend a good reference text for kids this age?
Answer
Donald,
Pitching from the stretch is done when you don't use a full wind up. In professional or higher levels of baseball where baserunners are allowed to take a lead from the base, a pitcher pitches from the stretch in order to hold the runner closer to the base and prevent stolen bases. When no runners are on base, the pitcher throws from the full windup.
I love Nolan Ryan's pitching bible. Ryan is a master and has great info in his book. Pitching mechanics and technique are the same no matter what age. The better they are, the better the pitcher.
I hope this helps.
