3rd Baseman Positioning: Optimal Stance for Fielding Throws

Question
What is the proper position for a 3rd baseman in relation to the bag to take a throw:
1)From a infielder/outfielder on runner aproaching third base.
2)When holding a runner on base and taking a pickoff throw from pitcher.

Ex. Straddle bag
   to left of bag
to right of bag, faciing home or second base etc.

Answer
You want to be in the best position to make a tag. It depends on the direction from which the throw is coming. I would not recommend straddling the bag, because if the throw is offline, you may have trouble getting to the ball being blocked out by the runner. Stay to the same side of the bag from which the throw is coming. For pickoffs, the same rule applies.
