Question
my kid is 15 years old and is catching in high school
the coach does not like the catchers to  use knee savers
i think he needs to use them to save his knees long term. what do you think.

Answer
Paul,

Thanks for the question.  This is a tough situation as the coach has made his wishes apparent.

As for me, I wear them when I am catching a pitcher in the bullpen.  I have 3 catchers on my 14 year old team.  All three wear them.  I love them.  I think they are great.  I am also a sports doctor.  They do make a difference and will make a long term difference in the help of the knees.

My advice is for you to speak to the coach about it.  Ask him why he does not allow them. The possible problem: Depending on the coach's temperament and personality, he may take it out on your son.  I hope not as this would be wrong.  I have a kid on my team that definitely rubs me the wrong way.  However, he gets the job done.  I put my personal opinion of he and his parents aside as long as he plays by team rules and does his job in practice and games.

I hope your son's coach has the same philosophy.

Good luck and have a great baseball year!
