Rule 6.09 in 2005 Official Baseball Rules

Question
Bases loaded, two outs, the count is 0-2.  The pitch is made and the ball is called a strike.  The catcher misses the (third strike) ball. Can the catcher pick up the ball and touch home plate for the force since runners are advancing on the dropped ball or must he throw to first base to complete the strike out?

Please answer quesiton with rule as evidence.

Answer
David,

The catcher can make a force out by touching home plate, but the pitcher will not get credit for a strikeout.  The only way the pitcher gets a strikeout is if the batter runner is put out at first base or on the way to first base.

Hope this helps!
