Pitching Limits for 9-Year-Olds: A Coach's Perspective

Is there a formula for determining how many pitches a nine year old should throw in a game?

I coach here in Florida, where we have very competitive 8-U travel teams.  I feel that kids this young need to be VERY careful not to cause any undo strain to their arms.  I think 40 pitches might be a good number for a nine year old.  

Is there a formula?  I don't think so.  At that age, the defense is usually so tenuous as to require a greater number of batters faced than in later years.  

Develop as many pitchers as possible--it will pay off well in later years for your program.
