Hitting vs pitching

Question
How can I find info that proves over a long period of time that either pitching or hitting is more important. I would like stats or percentages that verify that one or the other is the more important factor. ie: a season or several seasons.

You've broached one of the great debates in the history of the study of baseball statistics.  There is no answer, but I'll point you to a couple things to read to at least begin to formulate your opinion.

Try Bill James' book 'Win Shares.'  Also, Chapter 10 in the book 'The Hidden Game of Baseball' by Thorn and Palmer.  Both books should be available in a decent sized public library.
