Batter Interference: Rules & When to Call It
Question
On a passed ball or wild pitch, does the batter have to vacate the box if the runner on 3B breaks for home? If so, what would be the call? Thank you.
Answer
Neil;
Using rule 6.06, it says the batter is out when "interfering with the catcher's fielding or throwing by stepping out of the batter's box or making any other movement that hinders the catcher's play at home base. EXCEPTION: Batter is not out if any runner attempting to advance is
retired or if runner trying to score is called out for batter抯 interference."
In your situation, the batter may remain in the box, as long as his movement in the box does not interfere with the catcher fielding or throwing the ball.
I hope this has helped.
