protest???

Question
Runner on 2nd two outs. Batter is called out at first ,third out. Runnner on 2nd trots across the plate as offensive coach appeals to base ump to get help claiming first base man was off the bag. He asks and plate ump reverses the call runner at first now is safe plus he allowed the runner from third to score.

I am standing firm that play could not be appealled because it is a judgement call from the start. If I am wrong here then what happens to runner scoring from third because once the umpire jeopordized the play , defensive players could have cared less what he was doing with three outs in.

Answer
OK, I am going to totally disagree w/ you on this one.  All good umpires wish to get the call correct.  We go to each other many times & this one is no different.  Just like a check swing, yes that's a judgement call also.  We want to get the best angle on plays & sometimes we are just blocked out or straight-lined.  That's why we ask our partners.

As far as the runner, he scores.  You said he was crossing home plate, therefore I think he scores either way no matter what the call.  The umpire cannot jeopardize the play in any way and there is no protest...

Thanks for your question.  Have a great day...

Just curious, were you the coach? A dad? Or a spectator?
